Construction sites are busy, ever-changing places where risks can shift from day to day. With lots of different trades, heavy equipment, work at heights, temporary structures, and tight deadlines, having strong health and safety measures in place is a must.
The latest data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) shows why this is still so important. In 2024/25, there were 35 fatal injuries to construction workers in Great Britain, and the sector’s fatal injury rate was about 4.8 times higher than the average across all industries. HSE also estimates around 50,000 construction workers suffer non-fatal injuries each year, based on those years from 2022/23 to 2024/25. Falls from heights continue to be one of the top causes of death in the industry, while slips, trips, and falls remain some of the most common non-fatal injuries.
Here are eight of the most common hazards on construction sites and some practical ways to manage them.
1. Falls from Height
Falls from heights can happen from roofs, ladders, scaffolding, fragile surfaces, open edges, and incomplete work platforms. These accidents are often serious and can happen fast if proper controls aren’t in place.
How to control the risk:
- Avoid working at height where possible
- Use suitable access equipment, edge protection and safe working platforms
- Inspect ladders, scaffolds and working platforms regularly
- Make sure workers are trained and supervised
2. Slips, Trips and Falls
Slips, trips and falls are common on construction sites because ground conditions, access routes and work areas often change throughout the project. Uneven ground, trailing cables, poor lighting, mud, waste materials and badly stored equipment can all increase the risk.
Good housekeeping is one of the simplest ways to reduce these incidents. Walkways should be kept clear, level and well lit, while waste materials should be removed regularly. Cables, hoses and temporary services should be routed safely, and tools and materials should be stored in designated areas rather than left in access routes.
3. Manual Handling and Musculoskeletal Injuries
Construction work often involves lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and repetitive tasks. Poor manual handling can lead to back injuries, strains, sprains and long-term pain, particularly when heavy or awkward loads are moved without proper planning.
How to control the risk:
- Use mechanical aids or lifting equipment where practical
- Plan deliveries so materials are stored close to the work area
- Reduce load weights where possible
- Train employees the techniques to lift safely
4. Moving Vehicles and Plant
Construction sites often involve excavators, dumpers, forklifts, telehandlers, delivery vehicles and other forms of plant. In construction, “plant” generally refers to machinery, equipment and vehicles used to carry out site work. Without proper controls, workers and visitors can be struck, trapped or crushed.
Pedestrians and vehicles should be separated wherever possible using marked routes, barriers and exclusion zones. Vehicle movements should be planned before work begins, reversing should be minimised, and trained banksmen or signallers should be used where needed. Plant should only be operated by trained and authorised workers.
5. Falling Objects and Lifting Operations
Falling tools, materials, debris or equipment can cause serious injuries, particularly during work at height, scaffolding activities, demolition and lifting operations.

- Secure tools and materials when working at height
- Use toe boards, netting or exclusion zones where needed
- Plan and supervise lifting operations properly
- Keep people away from areas where overhead work is taking place
6. Excavations and Groundworks
Excavation work can be dangerous because the sides of a hole or trench can collapse without warning. This can put workers at risk of being buried, crushed or trapped. Other risks include striking underground cables or pipes, water collecting in the excavation, and people or vehicles falling in.
Before digging begins, the area should be checked for underground services such as gas, water and electrical lines. Excavations should be made safe by supporting the sides, creating a safe slope where needed, and keeping heavy materials, spoil and vehicles away from the edges. Workers should also have a safe way to get in and out, and excavations should be inspected regularly, especially after bad weather or changes in ground conditions.
7. Electricity, Dust and Hazardous Substances
Electrical hazards, silica dust, wood dust, cement, solvents, asbestos and other hazardous substances can all cause serious harm. Some effects, such as respiratory disease or dermatitis, may develop gradually over time.

- Use trained staff members for electrical work and temporary supplies
- Keep cables, tools and electrical equipment in good condition
- Control dust using extraction, suppression or on-tool systems
- Follow COSHH assessments and use suitable PPE where required
8. Poor Planning, Coordination and Communication
Many construction accidents happen because work is not properly planned or coordinated. With multiple contractors and changing site conditions, unclear responsibilities can quickly lead to unsafe situations.
Risk assessments and method statements should be prepared before work begins and communicated clearly through inductions, briefings and toolbox talks. Site managers should regularly review changing conditions, coordinate contractors and encourage workers to report hazards early.
