Mastering Safety: A Step-by-Step Guide to Risk Assessing
Risk assessments are a fundamental step in ensuring your workplace is safe for its employees and should be the backbone to any health and safety system. There are five steps to Risk Assessing which should be followed:
Step 1: Identify Hazards
Understanding Your Environment:
Thoroughly assess your workplace, processes, and activities. Collaborates with the team completing the activities to pinpoint potential hazards, encompassing everything from physical aspects to chemical exposures.
Step 2: Who may be harmed and how
Evaluating Likelihood and Severity:
Once hazards are identified, assess the risks associated with each. By considering the likelihood of an incident and the potential severity of its consequences, along with who may be harmed.
Step 3: Implement Control Measures
Mitigation and Prevention:
With a clear understanding of the risks, devise and implement robust control measures. This involves a combination of engineering controls, administrative measures, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimise or eliminate identified risks.
Step 4: Record your findings
Comprehensive Reporting:
If you employ 5 or more people you must record your significant findings, and the control measures to be implemented. This must be shared with the workforce completing the tasks and ensure you pass on training in the control measures. This document not only fulfils regulatory requirements but serves as a valuable reference for ongoing safety efforts.
Step 5: Regular Review and Adaptation
Dynamic Safety:
We emphasise the importance of regular reviews to ensure the controls are working. Conditions, processes, and technologies evolve and change that could need to new risks or the existing controls may no longer be effective.
